Things To Do

Some Ideas For Things To Do During Your Stay

There is so much to do in Cornwall that this can only be a small taster of what is on offer. Trevone is an excellent base for you to explore what Cornwall has in store.

I have divided this page up into various sections with links to just a few different attractions.

Scenic Beaches Sands And Cliffs

Sandy Beach Trevone Bay

Trevone Bay

In the immediate area is The Sandy Beach (Trevone Bay) (only about 300 yards from your accommodation. It is very popular with swimmers as it is a very safe beach which is life guarded from May to September. It has lovely golden sand (the kids love it for building sandcastles). Surfing and body boarding is popular at Trevone. You can hire wet-suits and boards locally and there are local surf schools that teach all age groups. It is a very clean as it is dog free during the summer as well as being cleaned every morning

To the West of the main beach of Trevone Bay you will find Newtrain Bay Beach locally known as Rocky Beach.   It has its own natural swimming pool and is very popular with children, exploring the rock pools for crabs and small fish. Here is a quick video

Harlyn bay beach scene

Harlyn Bay

Harlyn Bay Beach is considered to be one of the safest family beaches in Cornwall. It is a large sandy beach with lots of rock pools to keep the kids happy for hours. The beach has full lifeguard cover from April to the end of September.

With it's reputation of being one of the safest beaches in the whole county it naturally lends itself to people who want to learn to surf or paddle board. Having said that we cannot let the moment pass without mentioning what is possibly the premier surf school in Cornwall, The Harlyn Surf School and here at St Edmunds we have no hesitation in recommending them.

They offer lessons in surfing, stand up paddle boarding, coasteering and kayaking. Your family can feel safe in their hands which is why on Trip Advisor, Google and Facebook they have 5 stars for "Customer Experience Rating"

.

Constantine Bay

Constantine Bay

Constantine Bay is very popular with surfers and has full lifeguard cover from May to September. If you fancy a daily surf report for this beach as well as others plus a few webcams, you can see that HERE.

Mother Ivey's Bay near padstow

Mother Ivey's Bay

If you are looking for a very peaceful beach you could try Mother Ivey's Bay. It got its name from the legend of Mother Ivey, who was a local white witch, who legend has it cursed a local family. It is just around the corner from Harlyn Bay. because of it's lack of facilities it rarely gets crowded, even on the busiest summer days.

One beautiful scenery coastal walk, takes you up to Trevose Head which is owned by The National Trust. It is popular with runners and walkers alike.  The lighthouse at Trevose Head was built in 1847 and whilst originally manned became automated in 1995.

Finally in this section we just need to mention The South West Coast Path. Come to the beach anywhere in the South West and turn left or right and you will find yourself on the South West Coast Path . It is the longest National Trail in the UK and is in total 630 miles of amazing coastline and stunning scenery.

Other Fantastic Places To Visit

eden project

The Eden Project

One of the most visited places in Cornwall has to be the Award Winning Eden Project. Trust me, there is nothing else like it in the UK. Its quite difficult to describe and you are probably better to go to their site in the link above which explains it much better than I can. All I can say is that the Biomes alone will transport you into a world of their own.

They have concerts there as well, called the Eden Sessions. Most of them are sold out well in advance but you may be lucky and find an odd spare ticket at the last minute if someone cannot go. Previous acts have included Gary Barlow, Bastille, Madness, The Kaiser Chiefs, Van Morrison, Bryan Adams, Lionel Richie, Tom Jones and The Manic Street Preachers.

At the time of writing some acts they have got booked include The Stereophonics, Nile Rodgers and Chic, Liam Galagher, The Chemical Brothers, Snow Patrol and Kylie Minogue.

The Minack Theatre

If you are looking for something completely different how about a visit to the world famous open air Minack TheatrePerched on the cliffs above the Atlantic Ocean, Take your strawberries and cream and enjoy some fantastic theatre performances, under a starlit Cornish sky.

Lost Gardens Of Heligan

The Lost Gardens Of Heligan. Twenty-five years ago, Heligan’s historic gardens were unknown and unseen; lost under a tangle of weeds. It was only the chance discovery of a door in the ruins that led to the restoration of this once great estate. Today, The Lost Gardens have been put back where they belong: in pride of place among the finest gardens in Cornwall.

A Few Different Towns And Villages

Padstow harbour, st edmunds self catering apartments are nearby

Padstow

The colourful harbour at Padstow is a must see and is only 1.5 miles away from St Edmunds. Stroll around it's narrow streets and visit the quaint shops. There are excellent restaurants, many specialising in locally caught seafood.

Whilst talking of local seafood we are bound to mention Rick Stein's world famous Seafood Restaurant based in Padstow.

You can take a fishing trip or go sailing, windsurfing or water ski-ing in the bay. For the more adventurous there are also Power Boat Rides.

From here you can take a ferry trip to Rock, or hire a bike and join the famous Camel Trail, a cycle track running from Padstow through Wadebridge and Bodmin, onto Poley’s Bridge.A great day out with excellent pub stops.

If you happen to be in Padstow on May 1st you will experience something very special that Padstow is really famous for and draws thousands of people to the town - May Day or as its locally known "Obby Oss Day".

Port Isaac

Port Isaac

Just along the coast is a picturesque village probably best known to you as the fictional village of "Portwenn" in the TV series Doc Martin. The actual village is of course Port Isaac. Take a trip over to the village and have a look around and see Doc Martins House and the building used as the school and  "Mrs Tishell's" chemist shop (which is really The Buttermilk Shop). As you walk down into the village you will also see "Burt Large's" van parked up.

Port Isaac is also famous for something else. It is the home of The Fishermans Friends. Many of you may have seen the movie about them in the cinemas. Although touring a lot, the boys still occasionally find time to do a free show on The Platt at Port Isaac on a Friday night.

Don't Forget The Kids - Here Are A Few Ideas

There is just so much for children and families to do in Cornwall that we could not list them all but here are just a few ideas.

Lets start with one very close to your apartment, The Padstow Mystery Treasure Trail. Kids absolutely love this. It is a self guided murder, mystery walking trail around Padstow (ideal for kids 6 to 106).

The trail is approximately 1.5 miles long and takes about an hour and a half normally but you can do it at your own pace. Once you have solved the mystery you can enter it into a FREE £100 monthly draw.

PLEASE NOTE: If you want to do this trail you really need to download the trail and print it out at home before you come on holiday. Get the Padstow one HERE

If you are into cycling then you would really enjoy The Camel Trail You can either use your own bikes or you can hire bikes in Padstow. The Camel Trail provides access to beautiful Cornish countryside along a disused railway line and goes from Padstow to Wenfordbridge. It runs in total for about 18 miles and is mainly flat and traffic free.

Finally if Theme Parks are your thing then here are three that we would suggest you may enjoy.

Flambards family attraction cornwall

Flambards

Starting off with possibly the biggest one Flambards Theme Park at Helston. There is lots to do here including, plenty of sky high thrill rides as well as an undercover soft play area. Discover dinosaurs in the Jurassic Journey and uncover fossils in the Dino Dig.  Step back in time in their award-winning Indoor Attractions, the life-size Victorian Village and experience Britain in the Blitz. Flambards is one of Cornwall's most popular attractions.

Camel creek cornwall

Camel Creek

Camel Creek Adventure Park is only a few miles away between Padstow and Wadebridge and is a great family day out. Here is a map of the attraction:

Dairyland attraction cornwall

Dairyland Farm Attraction

If your children like animals, we would maybe suggest Dairyland Farm World. This is a bit smaller attraction but still lots to do including lots of children's activities and a large undercover play area. It is also a nice day out for the mum's and dads with the Cornish Heritage Centre, taking you back to a bygone age in Cornwall. There is also a milking display and a recycling display. It has a nature trail with a woodland walk down to a lake. If you cannot walk too well there is a daily Hayride from 1pm. This is still a working farm and one highlight is the daily milking demonstration at around 3.45pm. It has an amazing milking parlour. The cows step on to a merry go round milking machine. The milking parlour is like a space age nightclub (including a glitter ball) and the cows are milked to rousing music.

And Finally - For You Sporty Types

GOLF

golfer at trevose championship course

There are 3 excellent Golf Courses near to our apartments. Firstly The Championship Golf Course At Trevose is only 3 miles away. As well as this St Enodoc Golf Club and The Merlin Golf Club are also nearby. What could be better than a round of golf in the lovely Cornish fresh air.

Surfing

surfing in cornwall, Harlyn bay is close to St Edmunds holiday apartments at Trevone padstow

In theory you can surf at most beaches in Cornwall and locals may even tell you about special "surf spots" that aren't even on the recognised and more popular beaches. However, the most consistent and easily accessible tend to be on the beaches.

Probably the most popular and best known surfing beach in the UK is Fistral Beach at Newquay. Whilst it offers some great surfing, because of it's popularity it can also get very busy (up to 300 surfers at busy times) Very close to us is Polzeath beach. Ideal for beginners, it does not produce the same quality surf as Fistral.

Nearby one of the most popular surfing beaches is Harlyn Bay. A very safe beach and the home of possibly Cornwall's premier surf school The Harlyn Surf School

If you happen to be up in North Cornwall there are some great surf beaches around Bude. Firstly you have Widemouth Bay where the National Surf Championships were previously held and then in Bude itself there are 2 good surf beaches Summerleaze and Crooklets. Also at Summerleaze Beach, if you have anyone with you who may not surf but would just like to swim, there is a marvelous open air swimming pool that gets washed out regularly by the tide.

Adrenaline fun near padstow

And finally for you "Adrenaline Junkies" here is a suggestion to test your nerves Adrenaline Quarry. For the braver of you this place is so much fun. Lots to test your nerve here including the longest zip wire in the UK (490 metres long and 50 metres high). You cross an old quarry which is now full of water. There is a minimum weight limit of 25 kg and maximum 115 kg. If it is windy ring first if you want to do the zip wire as there are wind limits.

And Lots,Lots more

As you can imagine there are literally hundreds more things you can do in our beautiful county. Some are completely free and others you have to pay for. These are just a few suggestions for you to think about and I am sure you will have many more ideas when you arrive with us.

At different times of year there are special events going on nearby such as The Royal Cornwall Show and obviously we will try to inform you of any that we know of which we think you may be interested in during your stay with us.

We Look Forward To Welcoming You To St Edmunds
